Why You Don’t Need Perfect Kids to Leave the House

Let’s be real—taking kids out in public can be stressful. Whether it’s a quick trip to the post office or a family brunch, many parents feel anxious about how their children will behave and whether they’ll be judged by strangers if things don’t go smoothly.

In this week’s Ask Robyn, Erin and Robyn chat about where this fear comes from—hello, social media perfection pressure—and how we can break free from it. The truth is, kids aren’t designed to sit quietly in adult spaces for long stretches, and expecting them to be “perfect” is a setup for frustration (for everyone involved).

Instead of dreading the chaos, we talk about ways to meet your child where they’re at developmentally. This includes having realistic expectations, prepping them (and yourself) beforehand, and packing a mini “toolkit” for outings—think a small toy, snack, or sensory fidget, instead of relying solely on a screen. And don’t forget: give yourself a reward too! You’re doing a hard thing.

Tune in for some practical tips, a few laughs, and reassurance that it’s okay if your outing doesn’t go perfectly—what matters is showing up with love, patience, and a plan.
