How to Wind Down a Hyperactive Child for Bedtime

If your child turns into a wild whirlwind the minute you say “bedtime,” you’re not alone! In this week’s Ask Robyn, we explore what to do when your child is bouncing off the walls and you’re begging for peace.

First things first — know your child. Every little person is different. Some kids need calming before bed, while others actually benefit from more movement — yep, you read that right!

💡 Robyn explains the ISO Principle, which is about meeting your child where they’re at. If they’re full of beans, start with high-energy play like stacking cushions, falling into a play couch tower, a gentle wrestle or even a high-five dance-off. The key? Match their energy first, then slowly bring it down.

🎵 Try using music! Start with an upbeat song to match their mood, then slowly switch to slower tunes. As the beat calms, so do they. There are bedtime playlists based on 100BPM and lower that work wonders.

🧠 It’s all about transitioning — from energetic movement, to slow swaying, then gentle play like pushing cars slowly or hand washing. It might not look like a traditional bedtime story routine, but it works for some kids!

⏰ This whole wind-down process takes about 30 minutes, and it’s worth it. The goal is to help your child’s body be ready for rest — not just their mind.

Most importantly, make it work for your family. This doesn’t need to look perfect. If your child sleeps better after rough and tumble or a slow dance party — that’s a win!
